Before settling in Connecticut, Dr. Stehney practiced medicine in New York and New Mexico. At Lutheran Medical Center in Brooklyn, he served in a number of capacities, including Family Practice Residency Director, Director of Ambulatory Care, and Senior Vice President. He also served as Medical Director of the Sunset Park Family Health Center (a federally funded community health center in Brooklyn) and Medical Director of HealthCare Plus (a Medicaid HMO). In 1991, Dr. Stehney was named Medical Director of La Clinica de Familia, a community and migrant health center in New Mexico. In 1994, he became the founding Director of the Southern New Mexico Family Practice Residency Program, closely affiliated with the University of New Mexico School of Medicine. Dr. Stehney joined the Middlesex Hospital Family Medicine Residency Program in 1998, bringing with him extensive experience in medical education, residency administration, and clinical and community medicine. Dr. Stehney is past Chair of the STFM Groups on Residency Education and Genetics Education.
